¶ … Silence and Inner Voice
"a Grace of Silence": Inner and outer voices
When our inner voice coheres with the voices of the outer world, life is much easier. A beautiful girl is told by her parents, friends, and teachers that she is beautiful and therefore good and she feels better about herself. It is more difficult when the inner voice of self-worth and the outer voices of the world do not cohere, as is the case in Andrew Flewelling's essay entitled "A Grace of Silence." In the essay, Flewelling describes the experience of growing up a minister's son in a racially polarized Southern community. Of biracial decent, the child of a white father and an African-American mother, Flewelling was told throughout his life by the outer world that he was bad and not a worthy person because of his skin tone. To survive, he had to only listen to his true, inner voice.
But, as Flewelling's experience illustrates, we are not alone, as we can also look to our community for support. When he was young, this community support gave Flewelling the sense of 'I am' that he carried into adolescence and later adulthood. However, he admits that "as I got older, the noise of our civilization -- television, movies, history, religion -- began to…
Mandatory An attitude of 'firm persuasion' means that we have a sense of mission in what we do; a mission that cannot be easily diverted or silenced. At his core, Morrie's firm persuasion was that he was a teacher. Even when facing tremendous physical challenges and obstacles, he continued to teach Mitch and others about the nature of his life. One way to figure out what our life's work is and
Mise-en-scene As Gerald Mast states, "Details develop the film's emotional dynamics" (138), and these details are everywhere in the mise-en-scene. The most important aspect of the mise-en-scene, of course, is the acting. Actors are the most obvious props -- and Oh Dae-su provides ample instances of buffoonery that keeps Oldboy from sinking into the mire of its own violence. Despite all the gore, the film harbors a gentleness and affection, thanks
It has been suggested further that the transformational leadership is a special type of transactional leadership because both leaderships are goal oriented. The difference comes from the way methods used to motivate people and the goal sets (Hater & Bass, 1988). Thus, one model is based on the leader's power to inspire followers and the other is based on the leader's creativity regarding the reward system. The goals are
On a wider scale, the struggle of these immigrants would be familiar to many immigrants around the country. Many of them come to this country to contribute their talents and ideas. On a personal note, for example, my girlfriend's father Farouk is a West Indian immigrant from Trinidad & Tabago. After years of taking night classes, he earned his associate's degree in Electrical Enginnering. Today, Farouk is an engineer
As the two men enter the door to the last Trial, the music that is played is incredibly beautiful and celestial, as their ecstasy in coming to this point carries them onward. Much of the music in this act is dramatic and full of many voices and full orchestra. The music depicts glowingly the trials of the two men and their despair and longing as they search for their loves.
Nonverbal Behavior A first date is invariably a difficult situation. Both people feel insecure about what first impression they are making. Both feel the stress of a first encounter and worry about what to say and what to avoid. In addition, this stress might be compounded by the knowledge that nonverbal communication also plays a big role in the first impression created, as well as the decision to date the person
